Statistics and Demographics of Full-time Travelers and Their Job Market

How many people travel full-time? At least 93 million people worldwide. 21 million +/- of them want jobs. Because there is no full-time traveler statistical database, let alone one that identifies full-time traveler jobs and employers, itravelft.com is going to create one. Meanwhile, we’re highly qualified to extrapolate a statistical profile of the professional and lifestyle characteristics of people who permanently travel non-stop: full-time RVers, digital nomads, workampers, yacht liveaboards, extended stay travelers, vagabonds, solo travelers, deliberate hobos, etc.

US Full-time Travel Statistics Snapshot: 6,342,000 full-time travelers

1 million US citizens live in recreational vehicles (RVs)[1]

517,000 US citizens live aboard their boats full-time (extrapolation based on there are 11,500 marinas[2] in the US, the average number of slips is 449[3], assuming 10% of slip leases are liveaboards)

1.8 million extended stay hotel travelers (extrapolated from data that there are 5 million hotel rooms in the US[4], about 9% are extended stay[5] or 450,000 and average length of stay is 90 days[6])

1 million long-stay Airbnb travelers (extrapolation[7]: about 500,000 Airbnb.com properties in the US, 11% are reserved each day for 21 million bookings per year and 5% of guests stay 12 days plus[8]

1 million long-stay VRBO/HomeAway travelers (extrapolated from 530,000 VRBO/HomeAway listings[9] in the US, see calculations for airbnb above, used same formula)

300,000 long-term cruise ship passengers (extrapolated from data that 51% of 24 million cruise ship bookings are made by US citizens[10] and 2% of cruise ship bookings are 180 days or more[11])

21 million global travelers who want to work while traveling (by 2050 there will be 9.8 billion people worldwide[19] with approximately 44% traveling annually[20], of which 49% are of working age[21] — 25 to 64 years old, if only 1% of these people want to work while traveling full-time).
